The best tortillas in Glendale will soon be found at Carolina’s Mexican Food. The local family-owned restaurant will open a sixth location at 5930 W. Greenway Road, according to recent real estate intel. Carolina’s Mexican Food has been serving authentic Mexican food in the Valley since 1968, earning a reputation as having “The Best Tortillas in Town!”
Carolina’s Mexican Food in Glendale should be ready to open by early fall at the latest. “We are still in the planning phase and our owners are working with the architects to get the layout right. It ultimately is going to depend on how quickly plans are approved and how long it takes for equipment to arrive,” Director of Operations Jeff Corey tells What Now Phoenix, citing supply chain issues as a major factor in their plans.
Carolina and Manuel Valenzuela began selling homemade tortillas, burritos, and tamales out of the backseat of their family car in the 1950s. In 1968, they fulfilled their dream and opened their first restaurant at 105 W. Hilton in south Phoenix. It wasn’t long before they established a reputation for making some of the best Mexican food in the Southwest.
Over the decades business continued to boom, necessitating a need for expansion. To this day, the business remains within the family. Owner Victoria Tiedens, one of Carolina’s granddaughters, owns and operates the locations in North Phoenix, Peoria, and Mesa alongside her husband, David.
Tiedens is opening the new location in Glendale. The original location on Mohave Street, plus the Avondale location, are separately owned and operated by Victoria’s sisters Angela, Jennifer, and Josephine Hernandez. For more information, visit www.carolinasmexicanfood.com.
