While the news that La Fonda Mexican Restaurant & Cantina will serve its final meals at 1831 East Baseline Road in Tempe on November 7th is deeply saddening, all is not lost. In an announcement made across social media channels just yesterday, the beloved restaurant of some 50+ years says the plan is to reopen at a new site.

“We will be closing our current location Sunday, November 7th. We hope to be up and operating in just a few months or less. We will keep our website and social media updated with the new opening date and location,” reads the announcement.

La Fonda cites two reasons for the relocation. The first is that Ray and Janet Pedraza are retiring. The husband-and-wife team are also the son and daughter-in-law of La Fonda’s founder Eloise Franklin, who first opened the Sonoran-style Mexican restaurant in 1967. The second reason for the closure is that the building on E. Baseline Road has come under new ownership. “The 3rd generation will now keep the 1967 tradition going,” adds the post.

There is no word yet on when or where La Fonda will reopen, however an LLC filing for La Fonda Mexican Cocina names Christina Cox and Angela Cota as the company’s members.

You’ll want to keep an eye on La Fonda’s social media for updates.
