JJ’s Grubb Shack is preparing to open at 4906 E. Main St. in Mesa, according to a recently issued liquor license in state public records. Taking over the former Sunny World, the 5,190 square-foot restaurant space has been transformed into a friendly family restaurant where all are welcome.

Owner JJ Holmes, who has been in the industry for eight years and counting, confirms that they are projected to open by the first week of January 2022 at the latest. “We are very excited to open a new restaurant in Mesa, which is definitely in need of a concept like this. There is nothing else like this in the area,” Holmes tells What Now San Francisco. 

The inspiration for JJ’S Grubb Shack comes from the backyard barbecues and catfish frys Holmes and his wife held for friends and family when they lived in Colorado. Wanting to recreate these memories and share them with their community, they created JJ’s Grubb Shack – a place where locals are served delicious “grubb,” able to watch their favorite sports, grab a drink, and are ultimately treated like family. 

Holmes originally had three JJ’s Grubb Shacks throughout the Valley but all have closed due to unforeseen circumstances. Now, he looks forward to hitting the reset button in Mesa and starting anew. The menu at Mesa will include most of JJ Grubb Shack’s classics from their selection of Backyard Burgers to their scrumptious “Sammiches.”

This time around, Holmes does have something new up his sleeve. He’s excited to introduce smoked BBQ menu items, as well as chicken thighs and legs that can compete with their mouth watering wings. And of course, there will also be a full bar.
