Kayla and Peter Lardakis are no strangers to the restaurant world. In fact, it’s kind of how they met, through connections from Peter’s first restaurant Kanela Breakfast Club in Chicago. Fast forward 8 years, and the two, still based in Chicago, now operate 6 Kanela locations as well as Dakota 94, a restaurant serving home-style plates in Chicago’s Edgebrook Neighborhood.

So what does this have to do with AZ? Well, the restaurateurs have family in the area, which over the last few years, has brought them increasingly closer to our great state.

Speaking with What Now Phoenix, Kayla Lardakis says she and Peter were taken by the warm people and the lovely area. “We just loved it,” she said. So much so, that they decided to open a Dakota 94 sister restaurant in Tempe.

Badlands Bar & Grill, named for Kayla Lardakis’ North Dakota roots, will continue in the tradition of its Chicago-sibling. The eatery will serve home-style meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as offer a cocktail menu, all craft beer, and rosé on draft.  “All the recipes are my recipes, my mom’s recipes,” shared Lardakis. “It feels like home cooking, that’s kind of the whole idea.”

The neighborhood friendly spot will be open from 8AM to 10PM daily, and some of those home cooked plates come in the form of Lemon Butter Walleye, Mom’s Fish & Chips, Prosciutto Wrapped Chicken, and Homemade Meatloaf. And you won’t want to miss the eatery’s Saturday and Sunday Boozy Brunch menu either.

Badlands is headed to 7192 S Price Road in Tempe, to the space that previously housed TRES Kitchen & Bar. Lardakis says the new eatery will likely open this month, during the week of the 11th. We recommend following Badlands on social media so you don’t miss a thing.
